Beloved Colleagues:

Today the United States suffered a vicious attack by terrorists. Many good Americans perished.

Let us reach out to the families and friends of the victims with love and understanding.

Let us not allow these desperate attacks to disrupt the magnificent daily life and productivity of the greatest nation in history. That would be victory for the terrorists.

Let us reach out vigorously to find and to punish those guilty of planning barbarian atrocity -- and move aggressively to protect ourselves against future assaults.

Let us above all not sink to the level of the barbarians, but rather take advantage of the national focus on this tragedy to preserve, strengthen and demonstrate the foundations of democracy.

Let us show the world how a strong democracy deals with mass murder of its citizens -- with fair process for the accused, with devastating justice for the guilty.
