IL NET training manuals include a wealth of useful material.  Although this manual is a few years old, it contains good information on organizing a proposal.  ILRU Project Development/Grant Writing Manual (1995)

Additional materials on grant writing for non-profits are available on line. Some of the resources below deal specifically with grant writing and some provide good guidance on any type of written communication.

The following is a list of commercially available books on proposal development.  These can often be found at libraries, local bookstores, and through on-line booksellers such as <www.amazon.com>.  Several are also shown as being available through the used book dealers affiliated with Amazon.

The "How To" Grants Manual: Successful Grantseeking Techniques for Obtaining Public and Private Grants, 4th Edition.  David G. Bauer.  Oryx Press.  ISBN: 1573563269
This is an excellent book offering a complete plan for organizing a grants strategy. This edition is recently published and it may be difficult to secure quickly.  Earlier editions may be available in your library or in used book stores such as those associated with Amazon.com.  This book is highly recommended by ILRU staff.  The forms are especially useful in guiding you through a planning process based on clear objectives.

Winning Grants Step by Step : Support Centers of America's Complete Workbook for Planning, Developing, and Writing Successful Proposals.  Support Centers of America.  Mim Carlson.  Jossey-Bass.  1995.  ISBN: 0787901180
This is a self-help workbook which has been "fieldtested" by the authors.  The book includes proposal examples.

Grantseeker's Toolkit : A Comprehensive Guide to Finding Funding.
Cheryl Carter New, James Aaron Quick.  1998.  John Wiley & Sons.  ISBN: 0471193038
This guide was developed from a series of seminars on developing a strategic plan for finding funds for programs. It addresses program development and proposal writing.  A CD ROM disk is included with exercises.

I'll Grant You That : A Step-By-Step Guide to Finding Funds, Designing Winning Projects, and Writing Powerful Proposals. Jim Burke and Carol Ann Prater.  2000.  Heinemann.  ISBN: 0325001979.
This is a complete course on obtaining grants.  It includes sections on writing, organizing, and presenting proposals.  The book includes a CD ROM with links to useful Web sites.

Secrets of Successful Grantsmanship : A Guerrilla Guide to Raising Money. Susan L. Golden, Alan Shrader Editor.  Jossey-Bass Nonprofit Sector Series.  1997.
ISBN:  078790306.
Although this book will not be useful for the upcoming federal funding cycle, it does describe an interesting approach to securing funds.  The book doesn't focus on writing proposals, but rather on direct funder contacts.  It is included in this list because it presents an interesting approach for other types of proposals--but definitely not for this upcoming announcement for CILs.

The mission of the IL NET is to provide training and technical assistance on a variety of issues central to independent living today--understanding the Rehab Act, what the statewide independent living council is and how it can operate most effectively, management issues for centers for independent living, systems advocacy, computer networking, and others. Training activities are conducted conference-style, via long-distance communication, webcasts, through widely disseminated print and audio materials, and through the promotion of a strong national network of centers and individuals in the independent living field.

Substantial support for development of this publication was provided by the Rehabilitation Services Administration, U.S. Department of Education. The content is the responsibility of ILRU and no official endorsement of the Department of Education should be inferred.

ILRU is a program of TIRR (The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research), a nationally recognized medical rehabilitation facility for persons with disabilities.
