COURSE DATES: August 13 - 31, 2007

ORIENTATION TELECONFERENCE FOR STUDENTS: August 9, 2007

PURPOSE: Participants take part in discussions led by the instructor about such topics as the culture and mission of an independent living organization, organization core values, ethical service provision, practical application of ethical codes and ethical demands on the board, executive, and service staff.

TARGET AUDIENCE: Center and SILC staff, managers, and executives, as well as board members. This is a beginning to intermediate level course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Participants will be able to define and identify their organization's culture and core values, create
an ethics code based on those values, assess values and value systems and relate them to formulating plans and actions to accomplish goals.

FORMAT: Participants will read assignments in the online course manual, complete exercises assigned by the instructor, and interact daily with the instructor and other students in an online discussion forum. Students will have an opportunity to learn about and share best practices. Students can ask and receive responses to their questions related to cultural awareness and organizational cultural competence from the instructor and their peers.

THE INSTRUCTOR: Richard Oestreich, Ph.D., is a rehabilitation consultant based in Chilicothe, Ohio. He has 30 years of experience in the public and private sectors of rehabilitation as a CEO of community rehabilitation programs and director of the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission.

PAYMENT INFORMATION: The course fee is $65 per participant. Payment may be made by credit card through the Web site at the time of registration. ONLINE COURSES FROM ILRU: This online course is presented by the IL NET, the national training and technical assistance project for centers for independent living and statewide independent living councils. The IL NET is operated by the Independent Living Research Utilization (ILRU) Program at TIRR in partnership with the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL). Online course implementation is facilitated by the Interdisciplinary Training Division of the Center for Persons with Disabilities, Utah State University.
