About the Webcast
The presentation provides an overview of Jamaica and its sociocultural influences on disability. The information may be useful for rehabilitation service providers in the United States who may serve Jamaican immigrants and their families. Some of the topics are: history and reasons for emigration to the United States, concept of disability, concept of independence, culture rituals, typical patterns of interactions between consumers and rehabilitation service providers, role of community and gender differences in service provision, eating habits, recommendations, and ways in which service providers can become more familiar with the culture.
About the Presenters
Doreen Miller, RhD, CRC, is a professor in the Department of Psychology and Rehabilitation Programs at Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she has worked since 1977. She was born in Jamaica and lived in both urban and rural Jamaican communities. She received her undergraduate and graduate education in the U.S., and was awarded the RhD in rehabilitation counseling from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Dr. Miller has received grants from the Rehabilitation Services Administration for training programs in rehabilitation services.
Sheila Campbell-Forester, MD is the Chief Medical Officer for Jamaica's Ministry of Health. She has served as the Vice President of the International Association for Adolescent Health and Jamaica Public Health Doctors Association; and technical advisor and consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and USAID. She holds a Medical Degree and Diploma in Public Health from the University of the West Indies and was a Humphrey Fellow at Emory University. She is a member of the Medical Association of Jamaica and the Society for Adolescent Medicine.
