Independent Living History and Philosophy

Overview

Explaining the history and philosophy behind Independent Living is commonplace among those involved in the movement. Common enough that most of us have a fairly standard response that we offer to those individuals, legislators, and friends and family members with and without disabilities unfamiliar with our principles and goals. But with so many important advocates, events, and philosophies contributing to the movement as a whole, not to mention the more confusing terms and legislation, there are certainly discrepancies and uncertainties in our sometimes daily explanations. That's why the IL NET is offering an interactive, comprehensive look at just how and why the movement started, what we've accomplished since then, and where we're headed.

So, Sign up to learn:

  • The fundamental ideas and essential individuals behind the movement's inception

  • How the Independent Living movement both parallels and differs from other civil rights and disability rights movements

  • The four fundamentals of Independent Living Philosophy

  • How legislation and public policies and services have impacted independent living

  • Exactly where our past and present goals, accomplishments, and principles are leading us in the future
