Determining Appropriate Services
for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students

Abstract

Students with hearing loss are very diverse group. The amount of loss, the age they lost their hearing, whether or not they use hearing aids, whether or not they sign and if so, what sign system is used all make a difference on which accommodations are most appropriate. Also, the type of classroom environment will affect the choice of accommodation. This presentation will look at a variety of accommodations (including interpreters, speech-to-text transcription, assistive listening devices and others) and how to determine which is most appropriate for a given student in a given classroom. This presentation is appropriate for high school and college counselors, teachers, parents, students and other interested individuals.
