Recreation Access: Research to Practice

Abstract

Providing access to recreation is challenging considering the unique environments and fundamental nature of the various activities and settings. Since 1992, the National Center on Accessibility has been a leader increasing awareness of inclusion of people with disabilities in parks, recreation and tourism. Through research, education and technical assistance, NCA provides outreach to land management agencies and recreation practitioners on universal design and accessibility solutions that create inclusive recreation opportunities for people of all abilities. This session will highlight some of the NCA research findings on visitor expectations and access to swimming pools, trails, golf courses, playgrounds and other recreation areas. A lively Q & A session will follow, giving participants the opportunity to ask questions related to accessing parks and recreation facilities.
