How to Weave through the Special Education Maze in the Wake of Hurricane Katrina

Abstract

This web cast will focus on issues specific to students with disabilities who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina and provide information on a few key changes to Individuals with Disabilities Education Act 2004 (IDEA).

The web cast will focus on information parents and advocates need in order to pursue evaluations and services for students who, prior to the Hurricane, received special services pursuant to an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and who continue to need special education and related services. Further, this session will provide information on how to assist students who are newly diagnosed acquire needed services under IDEA. The web cast will also cover the recent activity in Congress regarding waivers of the No Child Left Behind Act and IDEA to States impacted by Hurricane Katrina and how these possible changes may effect students with disabilities. Finally, this session will touch on some of the key changes to IDEA that may be especially pertinent to students who have been displaced and are now attending a new school.
