Court Accessibility

Abstract

Mr. Humburg will outline Florida’s efforts to address accessibility within the court system, including the role of the Florida Supreme Court’s standing committee on “Fairness and Diversity”. The committee, of which Mr. Humburg is a member, is charged with developing a plan to remove physical barriers throughout the court system. Ultimately, the committee aims to develop and implement a statewide transition plan to eliminate identified barriers.

Dr. Blanck will provide a historical and legal perspective of federal and state responsibilities for the accessibility of their court facilities and services, including access to building facilities, communications and information, historical structure exemptions, and qualifying as a juror.

Prof. Myhill will review meaningful engagement in court proceedings, in consideration of such factors as lighting and seating arrangements, use of assistive devices and new courtroom technologies, and reasonable modifications to procedures. Additionally, he will discuss current and future trends in developing and implementing accessibility standards for courts.
