Voting Systems Accessibility

Abstract

Participants will hear an overview of developments related to the design of accessible voting systems within an evolving environment. Learn about the requirements of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) and the creation of the Election Assistance Commission (EAC).  Become familiar with the structure (staff as well as advisory) and programs, such as research and technical assistance, of the EAC.  Recognize the significance of the EAC program to approve Voting Systems Testing Labs (VSTLs) and to certify voting systems as HAVA compliant.  Understand the advisory role of the Access Board. Receive a summary of some of the specific accessibility design provisions from the Voluntary Voting Systems Guidelines (VVSG).  Identify some specific issues of interest, such as accessible vote verification.  Note related resources, such as the DOJ Checklist for Polling Places.  Discuss recommendations for disability community leaders.
