A Multicultural Approach to Rehabilitation

About the Presenters

Paul Leung is a Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation, Social Work and Addictions at the University of North Texas. He has held academic and administrative appointments at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia, the University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Arizona. His interests include disability/rehabilitation related to persons with disabilities from diverse backgrounds (racial/ethnic) and students with disabilities. Dr. Leung received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association (APA) for his distinguished contributions in the areas of rehabilitation psychology practice, science, public interest and education and training. He was editor of the Journal of Rehabilitation from 1987 to 1996.

William B. Talley is an Acting Dean of the School of Health Professions, and Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Services at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. He previously served as Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation and Director of the Institute for Social and Rehabilitation services at Assumption College. He has spent more than twenty-five years working first as a practitioners and, more recently as an educator. His academic and research interests have focused on the analysis of state of the art treatment approaches and best practices in the health professions. Dr. Talley has published numerous journal articles and book chapters on multicultural rehabilitation issues.

Carl R. Flowers is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Rehabilitation Administration and Services (RA&S) program in the Rehabilitation Institute (RI) at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Prior to joining the RI faculty, he was Director of the Region X Rehabilitation Continuing Education Program (RCEP) at Western Washington University, in Seattle, WA and Program Manager with the Region V RCEP at SIUC. Dr. Flowers earned his Rh.D. in Rehabilitation from SIUC in 1993, is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), and was named a Switzer Scholar in 2001. Dr. Flowers is past President and Board Chair of the National Association of Multicultural Rehabilitation Concerns (NAMRC) and has widely published on multicultural competency and equity issues in the public rehabilitation service delivery program. His current research interests include leadership, staff and organizational development, ethics, and multicultural issues in rehabilitation education and program service delivery.
