The ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA) and Its Implications for the Future of the ADA

About the Presenter

Arlene B. Mayerson, Directing Attorney of the Disability Rights and Education Fund (DREDF), is one of the nation's leading experts in disability rights law and has been a key advisor to both Congress and the disability community on the major disability rights legislation for the past three decades, including the Handicapped Children's Protection Act, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). She has testified as an expert witness before several committees of Congress.

Ms. Mayerson represents people with disabilities and parents of children with disabilities in cutting edge class actions in education and access to public services. She has represented parties and amici curiae, including disability organizations and members of Congress, on key disability rights cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1995, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education appointed Arlene Mayerson to the Civil Rights Reviewing Authority, and she served for three two-year terms until 2001.

In addition to her position at DREDF, Ms. Mayerson holds a faculty appointment in disability law at the University of California, Berkeley (Boalt Hall School of Law). She has published many articles on disability rights and is the author of a comprehensive three-volume treatise, The ADA: Americans with Disabilities Act Annotated-Legislative History, Regulations & Commentary (Clark Boardman Callaghan, 1994), which sets forth the legislative history and regulations for each provision of the ADA. She serves on the Board of Directors of The Impact Fund and won the Spirit of Independence Leading Advocate Award from the Center for Independent Living in 1993 and the American Diabetes Association Public Policy Award in 1997. Ms. Mayerson holds a B.S. degree from Boston University, a J.D., Order of the Coif, from Boalt Hall, and an L.L.M. from Georgetown University.
