Access to Medical Facilities

Abstract

The training session is tailored to Architects & Engineers, Medical Care Facility Managers, Directors of Plant Operations, ADA Coordinators and others concerned with ADA accessibility in the medical care environment, and ensuring the best quality of care, customer service and independence for patients needing accessible features, as well as family members with disabilities.  This session will present an overview of common issues with accessibility at medical care facilities, including barriers found in older hospital buildings, and errors in new construction most commonly documented by accessibility surveys of hospital projects.

For older buildings, practical solutions for barrier removal will be discussed regarding specific areas like Accessible Parking & Passenger Loading Areas, Public Restrooms, Accessible Patient Rooms, Dressing Rooms and Imaging Areas.  Common new construction errors currently being documented on access surveys and construction inspections will be shared with participants, as well as suggestions for making sure accessibility is addressed throughout the construction process from initial design to project completion.

The session will also provide references to resources for information on court decisions addressing the provision of accessible exam equipment, and policies for transfer assistance at imagining centers.

There will be time provided for questions and answers.
