Job Description:
The Information and Referral Specialist responds to requests for information
on disability related issues, provides referrals to other organizations and
services, and advocates on behalf of people with disabilities. This person
also provides updates and on information and referral to the Independent Living
Coordinator and assists the coordinator with the production of monthly and
annual statistics on IRCIL activities and services. The Information and
Referral Specialist works under the supervision of the Information and Referral
Coordinator.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Information
and Referral Services -- Responds to requests for information and technical
assistance on disability related issues, and general information to assist
people with disabilities to establish and/or maintain an independent life style. (This
may be via personal or other contact, including use of Text Telephone and/or
e mail communication.) Provides referrals to other organizations and
services to assist people with disabilities and other members of the public
to enhance individual independence and productivity.
- Advocacy
Services -- Advocates on behalf of individuals with disabilities as requested.
- Research/Data
Collection – Researches and collects information on disability issues,
services, related community organizations, rules, policies, regulations and
legislation and provides them to the Information and Referral Manager for entry
into the IRCIL database system. Provides updates to staff regarding new information
on a regular basis.
- Administration/Reporting
-- Maintains confidentiality of all consumer information and interaction. Completes
and maintains accurate and timely documentation and reports of information
and referral activities, consumer and community contacts and services, statistical
reporting, personnel time sheets and other reports and records as necessary.
- Community
Education/Outreach -- Conducts presentations and participates in community
outreach activities to increase awareness of Independent Living philosophy,
IRCIL, and disability related issues. Education and outreach may be provided
to people with disabilities and their families, community agencies, schools,
professional groups, business, government, and others.
MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Works
cooperatively with and/or assists other staff to accomplish various duties
or tasks.
- Performs
various office duties such as telephone reception, filing and/or file retrieval,
delivery/pick-up of needed supplies, etc. as needed.
- Performs
other related duties as assigned by the Information and Referral Coordinator,
Executive Director or his/her designee to further the mission of IRCIL.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Knowledge of, and commitment
to, the goals and philosophy of independent living.
- Proven successful interpersonal,
expressive and public communications skills.
- Some knowledge of laws,
regulations, programs, services and policies related to rights and services
for people with disabilities.
- Working knowledge of office
computer functions, including word processing and database software, and other
office equipment.
- Ability and willingness
to travel independently and be responsible for own transportation on a daily
basis. Must provide proof of vehicle insurance when using personal vehicle
or driver while conducting IRCIL business.
Salary: $11-14.00/hr
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Personal experience with a disability preferred. Ability to learn and describe
available resources and provide information.
