COURSE DESCRIPTION:

"The Action of Leading: SILC Leadership for Chairpersons, Members, and Staff" is a three week, on-line course designed to develop SILC leaders and improve the operations and effectiveness of SILCs.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

SILC Chairpersons, administrators (i.e. executive directors, consultants, coordinators) council members, and staff.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • Identify the laws and regulations that define and guide SILCs.
  • Describe the basic structure and responsibilities of your SILC.
  • Describe how to effectively collaborate with CILs on the SPIL and other activities.
  • Identify ways to effectively assess the needs of people with disabilities in your state.
  • Describe how to effectively conduct SILC meetings, SILC governance and operations.
  • Describe effective methods to recruit, engage, and maintain effective SILC membership.
  • Identify steps and processes for developing and/or amending your SPIL.

FORMAT:

Participants will read assignments in the online course manual, complete exercises assigned by the instructor, and interact daily with the instructor and other students in an online discussion forum. Participants can access the course Web site at any time of the day or night. This can be done from any computer with an Internet connection. Participants should plan on spending 1-2 hours each day reading assignments, completing course work and participating in the discussion.
