Independent Contractor, Disabled Persons Protection Commission (DPPC), Braintree, MA

About the Position

The DPPC is seeking a full or part-time independent contractor through June 30, 2021 to oversee development and operations of a peer support team to provide outreach and peer support to sexual abuse/assault survivors with disabilities, including survivors with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This includes overseeing the recruitment, hiring, and training of Peer Support Persons, drafting program protocols and outreach materials, and collection of data. Peer support is a well-researched, effective means of addressing behavioral and medical health recovery. Research has shown that peer support staff are trusted by survivors in a way that professionals are not, and they have a close understanding of communities of persons with disabilities.

This trusting relationship enables peer support staff to serve as a liaison/link/intermediary between persons with disabilities and sexual abuse/assault trauma services. Peer Support Persons will facilitate access to trauma services and improve the quality and cultural competence of the service delivery of DPPC’s Sexual Abuse Response Unit. Peer Support Persons will also build individual and community capacity by increasing sexual abuse/assault trauma knowledge and self-sufficiency through a range of activities such as outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support and advocacy. The Peer Support Coordinator will also be responsible for:

  • Providing direct training, supervision and support to the Peer Support Leaders and Peer Support Specialist;
  • Program Development;
  • Drafting a curriculum with protocols and outreach materials for Peer Support Leaders to align with best practices nationwide for self-advocacy organizations;
  • Coordinating the provision of direct one-to-one peer support to sexual assault survivors with disabilities
  • Coordinating peer outreach and training to rape crisis centers, self- advocacy and disability organizations, and other related organizations;
  • Coordinating Peer Support Leaders outreach events and transportation
  • Accessing a vehicle and a MA Driver’s License for statewide travel; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in disability studies, social work, counseling, psychology or related field, at least three years of work experience in a relevant field, and at least two years of experience working directly with persons with disabilities and/or peer support workers with disabilities. In addition,

  • Working knowledge of state resources available to violent crime victims;
  • Sexual abuse/assault work experience with vulnerable populations;
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities, including persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities;
  • Ability to supervise and mentor persons with disabilities; and
  • Ability to conduct outreach to self-advocacy organizations within MA.
