About the position

Job Description

This position involves working with people with various disabilities to help them to set goals towards independence. The Independent Living Coordinator will conduct IL evaluations, provide IL skills training, and advocacy. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong personal skills, excellent communication skills, ability to multi-task, and the desire to help people with disabilities to reach their full potential. This is a full-time position, 32 hours a week. Hours are flexible. Benefit package available after successful completion of a 90-day probation period.

Job Duties

  • Conduct intakes via phone and in person.
  • Provide information and referral via phone, email/mail or in person as appropriate.
  • Develop IL Plan based on participant-identified IL goals.
  • Assist the participant to develop an action plan with measurable goals, objectives, and timelines.
  • Develop and maintain participant files according to established policies. 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to independent living philosophy in his or her work with participants.
  • Use effective and adaptive teaching techniques when working with participants, stressing personal choice and control over services to the greatest extent possible. 
  • Make presentations describing CFI’s services to other agencies and organizations in order to attract fee-for-service opportunities.
  • Keep records requested by funders for compliance and reporting purposes.
  • Ability to develop and present educational workshops and related projects on issues of importance to persons with disabilities. 
  • Provide community advocacy to reduce or remove barriers to independence in housing, transportation, or other areas. 
  • Ability to recognize situations that might pose a threat to personal safety and act accordingly. 
  • Other duties as assigned.


BA degree in Public Administration, Social Work, Psychology or a related field is preferred but not required. Prior personal and professional experience with disabilities may be substituted for education if the individual meets the essential functions of the job.

  • Experience as a case manager or social worker is a plus.  
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including but not limited to WORD, EXCEL, Publisher, and PowerPoint. 
  • Ability to become proficient in using CFI’s client data base and any other software programs needed to perform job duties.
  • Knowledge of ADA regulations is a plus. 
  • Experience living with a disability is a plus. Fluent in ASL is a plus. 
  • Must be able to pass background check. 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a vehicle. Travel is required for this position.
