ST. PAUL, MINN, December 21, 2020: The Metropolitan Center for Independent Living (MCIL) is pleased to announce Executive Director Jesse Bethke Gomez, MMA has been selected to the list of Minnesota’s 100 Most Influential Health Care Leaders. The list, presented once every four years by Minnesota Physician, recognizes outstanding leadership in the health care field. From physicians to political leaders, business executives, policy analysts, nonprofit agency leaders, and more, the honorees represent the depth and breadth of those leading Minnesota’s complex health care delivery system and their impact in creating the State’s global standard of excellence.

“On behalf of the MCIL Board of Directors, we are proud of Jesse being named to this prestigious list. He has elevated the critical need to find solutions to the direct care services workforce shortage and in-home care support needs across our state. Jesse’s leadership in our community demonstrates his dedication to assist people with disabilities continue to live independently in their own homes, especially during this tragic pandemic,” said MCIL Board Chair Jeff Bangsberg.

Through an extensive range of services, programs, resources, partnerships, and policy advocacy, MCIL provides responsive services that meet the ever-changing needs of the disability community. MCIL serves the seven-county metro area, assisting thousands of individuals in achieving independent living and accessible integration with and in the community and is among eight Centers for Independent Living located throughout Minnesota.

With his selection to the list of Minnesota’s 100 Most Influential Health Care Leaders, Bethke Gomez cites the critical need to build a statewide health care platform that meets people’s needs where they live, work and play. With nearly 625,000 people with disabilities in our state and another 680,000 residents over the age of 60, he recognizes the importance of this time and the opportunity to build Minnesota’s direct care long-term services workforce to efficiently deliver care while also creating career growth pathways and a favorable economic impact across the state.

To address the pressing needs and bring meaningful reform to direct-care services, MCIL is leading a statewide community innovation personal care assistant project to pursue a new Certified PCA role as a third tier to Minnesota’s PCA programs. The effort is supported through a generous Community Innovation Grant from the Bush Foundation. The new Certified PCA tier will offer increased economic benefits for providers while strengthening the workforce of those serving people with disabilities and people over the age of 60 in their homes and their communities.

“We are happy to get to support this work. The direct care worker shortage is a big challenge, in need of just the kind of creative problem solving MCIL is leading,” said Bush Foundation President Jennifer Ford Reedy.  “Congratulations to Jesse Bethke Gomez for being recognized for this and other work that makes our state work better for everyone!”
