About the Training

This training series is focused on the role of the CIL in facilitating and advancing successful youth transition. In Part 1, "Youth Taking Charge of Their Own Transition: The Role of CILs," the presenter provides you with strategies on how CILs can use the existing services they provide for all populations to support youth in transition. In part 2, "Best Practice Models to Enhance Transition to College and Careers," Dr. Izzo addresses a number of new practices that help prepare students with disabilities for college and eventual employment. Part 3 identifies some best practices and strategies to assist parents with challenging situations, explains their important roles and describes the role of centers and their involvement.

Learning Objectives (Part 1)

Upon completion of part 1, you will have knowledge and resources, which will enable you to:

  • Describe tools and strategies for self-assessment of student’s needs, interests, and preferences
  • Assist the student with developing an Independent Living Plan that enables the youth to describe and take charge of their transition process
  • Through peer mentoring, support students to gain the independent living and advocacy skills necessary for them to achieve their goals
  • Identify other resources available to youth and young adults that can support them in achieving their goals

Learning Objectives (Part 2)

Upon completion of part 2, you will have knowledge and resources, which will enable you to:

  • Describe evidence-based practices and resources to prepare youth with disabilities for successful transitions to college
  • Explain the difference between services mandated by IDEA of 2004 and services mandated by ADA and Section 504 of the Rehab Act
  • Identify examples of new postsecondary models developed under the Transition to Postsecondary Settings for Students with Intellectual Disabilities (TPSID)
  • Describe essential college survival skills that result in success in college and eventual transition to employment.

  • Explain the value and role parental involvement offers at key points in the transition process
