About the Training

Taking place in five parts, the Get to the Core of It series presents best practices and innovative approaches to the four core services: Information & Referral, Systems Advocacy, Individual Advocacy, Independent Living Skills Training, and Peer Support. Each presentation is brand new, incorporating the best material of the original presentations with fresh content developed from new experiences and feedback from our original audiences.

The fifth program in the series, Peer Support, features two presenters from ABIL – Arizona Bridge to Independent Living – a Center for Independent Living in Phoenix, Arizona.  ABIL's volunteer-based peer support program serves as an exceptional model for CILs of all sizes.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will have knowledge and resources which will enable them to:

  • Describe effective peer support program elements that can ensure successful service delivery, including peer recruitment, training, and supervision.
  • Describe the far-reaching benefits of a successful program for the CIL, the mentors and mentees, and the community.
  • Explain how to identify and build high potential volunteers to serve as future mentors.
  • Educate mentors to increase their ability to support, coach, and guide their mentees.

Target Audience

Executive directors, independent living specialists, and other staff members of Centers for Independent Living who are involved in supervising or providing peer support.
