Description

RapidCourses is a self-paced learning option, fully accessible (508 compliant) and available 24/7, allowing you to "Learn at the Speed of YOU!" This web-based, user-friendly curriculum is easy to navigate and is designed to provide essential, fundamental knowledge of the independent living field. Each RapidCourse will take about 30 - 60 minutes to complete, with the option of "bookmarking" so you can return as many times as needed in order to complete the course. Additionally, you will also have ongoing access to the course content for reference and on-the-job support.

Foundations of Independent Living Series

History of Independent Living
Provides an historical overview of the emergence of the independent living movement and its importance in shaping societal attitudes. It is divided into the following sections: History of Disability Rights; Emergence of the Independent Living Movement; and Leaders of the Independent Living Movement. The RapidCourse will be especially useful to help New CIL staff and boards and new SILC members in becoming oriented to independent living.

Overview of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Provides an overview of the statutory, legal, and regulatory aspects of independent living. This course is divided into two sections: The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Related Statutes and Regulations of Independent Living. The RapidCourse will be especially useful to help New CIL staff and boards and new SILC members in becoming oriented to independent living.

Roles and Responsibilities of the IL Partners
Provides an overview of the key roles and responsibilities of the Centers for Independent Living (CILs), Statewide Independent Living Centers (SILCs), and Designated State Units (DSUs) in the total independent living program. The course will be especially useful to help New CIL staff and boards and new SILC members in becoming oriented to the roles and responsibilities of independent living partners.

Statutory Basis and Purpose of the SPIL
Provides an overview of good practices for developing a State Plan for Independent Living (SPIL) in collaboration with the Designated State Unit (DSU) and other agencies. The course will be especially useful for SILC members in helping them understand requirements for the SPIL.

Courses Relating to SPIL Development

Developing an Outcomes-Focused SPIL
Provides you with a three-step approach to developing an outcomes-focused SPIL. This course will help you organize your approach to developing your SPIL, providing guidance for defining and measuring outcomes that makes sense for your state and translating them into an effective SPIL. This course serves as a pre-requisite for Evaluating Your Outcomes-Focused SPIL.

Evaluating Your Outcomes-Focused SPIL
Provides you with the process of evaluating your SPIL on an on-going basis using a three-pronged approach. This is a pre-requisite for the companion course, Developing an Outcomes-Focused SPIL.

Consumer Service Records Series: Documentation, Interviewing and Goal-Setting

CSR Documentation: Consumer Service Records
Provides support to centers for independent living to accomplish their mission through provision of high quality and useful services and to employ effective business practices that provide a sound foundation of accountability to their consumers, their communities, and their funding sources. The primary, although not exclusive, audience for the tutorial is front line workers in centers. This course is designed to be used in orientation and training for new CIL staff and as a refresher for existing staff.
